In the context of computers, an adapter is a physical part or device that enables the connection of two or more incompatible devices for data transmission and reception. Since the early computers, adaptors were always used, especially when computers and standards started to evolve at a rapid pace. For example, a computer released in the 90s would have a certain set of ports (input/output ports) different from a computer from the 80s and different from a computer from the 00s, that is why adapters were introduced. Nowadays, for example, a new thin & light laptop may only have a USB-C port, and you would need an adapter to connect USB-A devices, same to connect an old printer or an old monitor.
A modern personal computer could need adapters in many different areas, such as:
Funny enough, it seems we need more adapters and dongles compared to a few years ago, and it’s definitely true, at least for phones and laptops.
Laptops are getting thinner and thinner and manufacturers are removing ports to do see. A computer from a few years ago was having an HDMI output for display, an SD card reader, and Standard USB-A for a USB Key or mouse but now, many computers ship with only a few USB-C ports and we need a dongle to plug anything into it.
Similarly, to gain internal space inside the last generation of smartphones, manufacturers tend to remove the headphone jack so users end up having to use a USB-C to headphone jack adapter in order to plug standard headphones.
